This is a grand old building, and it was a pleasure to help to restore some of its former good looks. The car park was re-concreted using a Belle mixer at a cost of £18 for the week! Entrance hall was modernised with paint and new carpet. The lower half of the exterior was re-pointed and painted.

Angola projects, June to July 2016

We were asked to carry out some repairs to the Land Rover fleet at Saurimo and Kamundambala as well as renovation in a mission house at Beula. The first job was to replace a cracked chassis with a new one. This was completed in less than a week by Mervin Hanna and Phil Kennedy.

At Beula, the house occupied by the family was being extended with a new section, and the existing building was being modified to include a new bathroom, store and laundry facilities. Extra lighting and repairs to power sockets improved the facilities.

Back at Kamundambala a timing belt was replaced and brake vacuum pump fitted among other routine maintenance to these heavily used vehicles.

Mission House, London

The property is over 100 years old and was showing signs of age. The request was to combine a bathroom and toilet upstairs and build a shower room and toilet downstairs as well as fitting out a new kitchen.

The photographs show how water seepage from outside and also from appliances had resulted in deterioration of the wood and it had all to be replaced. The area beneath the downstairs shower room is now concrete.

Floor Laying at a Mission House, Ireland

Two new volunteers fitted a wooden floor covering and most of the kitchen units.

Renovation of Bus Garage, Loches, France

The historical town of Loches have a very thriving evangelical church who have grown too big for the old bakery which they previously occupied. They took a lease on an old bus garage and asked if we could help in the preparatory work which would enable a separate flat to be rented out in the upstairs area as well as provide kitchen and counsel rooms downstairs. Much of the main floor space of the garage was going to have a new floor poured so that a wooden “Pod” could be constructed inside the building and would serve as the main area for the church meetings.

In addition to Brass Tacks, several other teams came afterwards and continued with the next phases of the construction. Jim and Annette Wheeler were excellent hosts and Jim was kept going full time organising supplies for the workers.

Renewal Project, Stockport, England

A disused mill property has provided the ideal location for an expanding work which started off in the local church property. Initially they took on computer repairs and then the work has expanded to include furniture manufacture and renovation as well as a large sales room for second hand furniture. Most of those involved in this work have come through the programme operated by Wesley and Alison Downs which helps to rehabilitate those who have been involved in substance abuse.

We have made several visits to the Mill to improve the facilities there and make them more purpose built for their needs.

School Kitchens, Chengelo, Zambia

Steve and Muriel Studd have constructed a facility to help the various mission stations with their transport and maintenance needs. In 2015 a team were involved constructing a roof over the workshop and storage area. This was held in place by welding to containers which double as safe storage areas for tools and a small workshop with lathe facilities.

Mission House, Kollegal, India

The mission house is very old and badly needed some maintenance to keep it useable by the various groups who visit the school and to help with the girls who live in the hostel during term time.

The house was completely renovated, in some cases even to revealing the foundations to ensure that it can be used for many years to come. The end result is simply amazing.
